Penyelamat pada akhir zaman disebut Imam Mahdi. Istilah Al-Mahdi berasal daripada kata kerja Hada-Yahdi yang bermaksud ‘membimbing’ atau ‘memberikan petunjuk.’ Keyakinan akan datangnya Imam Mahdi begitu menebal, baik dalam kalangan Ahli Sunnah Wal Jamaah mahupun dalam kalangan Syiah.
